Abstract

This paper compares the translation work of two renowned translators of Zhuangzi, James Legge and Herbert Allen Giles. This paper highlights that Zhuangzi, a significant text from the Warring States period, has profoundly influenced later generations with its deep philosophical insights and distinctive literary style. The translations by Legge and Giles have facilitated the spread of Chinese philosophy and culture in the West, showcasing their varied interpretations and expressions of Zhuangzi's philosophy. Through a comparative analysis of their translations of key concepts in Zhuangzi, this paper illustrates the unique translation styles and understandings of Zhuangzi's philosophical thoughts. These translations provide Western readers with a window to comprehend the "Tao" and offer valuable resources for global cultural exchange and philosophical reflection.
