The constitutive other: the construction of China’s image in Donald J. Munro’s academic genealogy

摘要

美国汉学家孟旦与其师徒对中国传统儒家叙事进行了深入探索,有必要探明其学术谱系对中国儒家形象的研究以及在形塑过程中体现的功用,本文认为,从他者视角中可以看出中国人以重家庭伦理道德,遵循克己复礼、学而为己以及强调情感价值和维护和谐的君子形象出现,儒家哲学以其仁爱观、道德情感以及进步儒学的形象登场。进而,深陷二律背反境地的西方单向度社会肇因于对立思维,可借鉴于中国智慧,中国人的君子形象和儒家哲学的道德伦理、人文内涵、实用价值、进步意义等可以提供实践样本和范式参照。

Abstract

Donald J. Munro is known as an American sinologist, and his academic lineage have conducted in-depth explorations into the narrative of traditional Chinese Confucianism. It is therefore necessary to examine how his academic genealogy researches the image of Chinese Confucianism and the functions embodied in its construction process. This paper argues that, from the perspective of the “other”, the Chinese people are portrayed as a “junzi” (gentleman) image characterized by prioritizing family ethics and morality, adhering to the principles of “restraining oneself and returning to ritual” (keji fuli) and “learning for one’s own improvement” (xue er wei ji), as well as emphasizing emotional values and maintaining harmony. Confucian philosophy, meanwhile, presents itself through its concepts of “benevolence” (ren), moral emotions, and the dimension of “progressive Confucianism”. Furthermore, the one-dimensional Western society, trapped in the dilemma of antinomies, stems from its oppositional thinking and can draw insights from Chinese wisdom. The “junzi” image of the Chinese people and the moral ethics, humanistic connotations, practical values, and progressive significance of Confucian philosophy can provide practical models and paradigmatic references.
