A study on the handling strategies of linguistic differences between English and Chinese in literary translation
英汉语言差异在文学翻译中的处理策略研究

摘要

本文以莫言小说《红高粱》及其葛浩文英译本为研究对象，探讨英汉语言差异在文学翻译中的处理策略。文章分析了英汉在语言结构（形合与意合）、文化内涵（文化负载词）和语用习惯（表达风格）等方面的差异，并结合具体案例，探讨葛浩文在翻译中如何应对这些差异，包括句子结构调整、文化背景传递和语用风格转换等策略。研究发现，这些策略在增强译文可读性和传递文化内涵方面取得了一定成功，但也存在局限性，如文化误解风险和语言对应困难。本文总结了葛浩文策略的适用性与制约因素，为翻译实践提供了参考，并对未来研究方向提出了展望。

Abstract

This article takes Mo Yan’s novel “Red Sorghum” and its English translation by Ge Haowen as the research object, and explores the strategies for handling language differences between English and Chinese in literary translation. The article analyzes the differences between English and Chinese in language structure (form and meaning), cultural connotations (cultural loaded words), and pragmatic habits (expression styles), and explores how Ge Haowen responds to these differences in translation through specific cases, including sentence structure adjustment, cultural background transmission, and pragmatic style transformation strategies. Research has found that these strategies have achieved some success in enhancing the readability of translations and conveying cultural connotations, but there are also limitations, such as the risk of cultural misunderstandings and difficulties in language correspondence. This article summarizes the applicability and limiting factors of Ge Haowen’s strategy, providing reference for translation practice and proposing prospects for future research directions.
