Multi-modal discourse perspective: animation film subtitle translation strategies and practices - A case study of Zootopia
多模态话语视角下动画电影字幕翻译的策略与实践——以《疯狂动物城》为例

摘要

随着全球文化融合，动画电影成为跨文化交流重要媒介，动画字幕翻译是译者和读者跨越语言壁垒的重要交流途径。有效的字幕翻译能增进受众与动画、译者的双向交流与理解，让受众捕捉源语言魅力、感知情感表达、领会创作意图、领略文化底蕴与语言之美。随着多模态话语分析理论发展，动画字幕翻译不再局限于文字转换，需兼顾画面、音效、角色情绪等信息。本文立足多模态视角，结合《疯狂动物城》案例，分析多模态动画字幕翻译的实践策略与典型特点。

Abstract

With the increasing globalization of cultural exchange, animated films have emerged as a pivotal medium for cross-cultural communication. Consequently, the translation of animated film subtitles constitutes a critical conduit for bridging linguistic and cultural divides between source and target audiences. High-quality subtitle translation not only facilitates mutual understanding between viewers and the original work, but also supports translators in conveying nuanced meaning, thereby enabling audiences to appreciate the linguistic artistry, grasp emotional subtleties, discern the creators’ artistic intent, and engage meaningfully with the source culture’s values and aesthetics. Informed by advances in multi-modal discourse analysis, contemporary subtitle translation extends beyond mere textual equivalence to encompass the integrated interpretation of visual cues, auditory elements (music and sound effects), and paralinguistic features such as character expression and gesture. Based on a multi-modal perspective and taking the case of Zootopia, this paper analyzes the practical strategies and typical characteristics of multi-modal animation subtitle translation.
