A study on the English translation of public signs in tourist attractions from the perspective of Skopos theory

摘要

全球化背景下,我国旅游业蓬勃发展,吸引了大批外国游客来探访中华美景及其背后的深厚文化底蕴,景区公示语的英译研究越来越受到重视。本文针对现今存在的景区标示语存在的英译问题进行总结,主要类型有忽略英语受众群体的接受和理解能力、译名不统一、文化漏译、单词拼写及大小写错误问题[1]。并在目的论理论指导下,结合常见的翻译方法如反译法、词类转换法、删减法,为景区标示语英译实践提供更多平行文本。

Abstract

Against the backdrop of globalization, China’s tourism industry has developed rapidly, attracting a large number of foreign visitors to explore the country’s scenic beauty and profound cultural heritage. As a result, the English translation of public signs in tourist attractions has received increasing attention. This paper summarizes the major problems existing in the English translation of public signs in tourist attractions, including neglect of the target English readers’ acceptance and comprehension, inconsistency in translated names, omission of cultural information, as well as spelling and capitalization errors. Guided by Skopos Theory, and in combination with such common translation methods as reverse translation, conversion of parts of speech, and omission, this paper aims to provide more parallel texts for the practice of translating public signs in tourist attractions.
