The dialectical role of testing and analysis in the conservation and restoration of paper-based cultural heritage— A discussion based on cases of calligraphy, paintings, and ancient books
检测分析在纸质文物保护修复中的辩证作用——基于字画、古籍案例的讨论

摘要
多种检测设备进入纸质文物修复现场后,修复方案有了更多的科学依据,但数据增多并不意味着修复方案更加合理。检测的真正作用在于分析病害成因、分辨材料差异、预测不同干预方案的风险系数,并能进行修复后的长期跟踪。本文以长武县博物馆清圣旨与《楚辞集注》古籍两个修复案例为依托,探讨颜料鉴定、纤维分类、纸张厚度、pH值、色度及碱储量等指标在保护修复方案设计中的数据支撑,并重点剖析了检测应用中存在的过度依赖单一指标、局部取样与原件整体差异,以及重短期成效而轻长期维护等关键问题。文章认为,检测须结合文物三大价值、使用目标和材料反应多种因素进行解读,避免用某一数值代替对整体状态的判断。例如,前人修复痕迹的保留或移除、补纸的选配、脱酸方式改变以及装帧形式的调整,都需要在文物修复三大原则下进行,否则会对文物造成二次损害。因此,修复后有必要建立一套完整的体系,包括对纸质文物的价值定义、病害问题剖析、目的性检测、小范围验证、分步实施到修复后复检,使检测真正成为修复设计依据和长期保存的基础手段,而不只是修复项目的附属环节。

Abstract
The incorporation of various analytical instruments into the on‑site restoration of paper‑based cultural heritage has undoubtedly strengthened the scientific basis for conservation planning. Yet, the mere accumulation of measured data does not automatically give rise to more reasoned decisions in restoration practice. The essential value of testing, rather, resides in its capacity to diagnose deterioration mechanisms, distinguish material differences, estimate the risk levels associated with alternative intervention measures, and enable sustained monitoring after treatment. Drawing upon two specific restoration projects—a Qing‑dynasty imperial edict and the ancient manuscript Chu Ci Ji Zhu (Collected Annotations to the Chu Ci) preserved at the Changwu County Museum—this paper investigates how parameters such as pigment composition, fibre type, paper caliper, pH, colorimetric readings, and alkaline reserve can effectively inform the development of conservation strategies. At the same time, the study draws attention to several practical difficulties that frequently arise in testing applications: over‑dependence on a single indicator, mismatches between localized sample data and the overall physical state of the object, and a prevailing inclination towards short‑term visible improvements rather than long‑term preservation. The paper maintains that the interpretation of test outcomes must be grounded in a holistic perspective that synthesizes the three core values of cultural heritage, the intended functional uses of the object, and the inherent response behaviour of its constituent materials. Only in this way can we avoid reducing a comprehensive condition assessment to a set of isolated numerical figures. For example, choices about whether to retain or remove earlier restoration traces, which repair paper to employ, how to adjust deacidification procedures, or whether to modify the binding format—all these must be made in strict accordance with the three fundamental principles of heritage restoration; otherwise, the artefact runs a real risk of sustaining secondary damage. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a comprehensive post‑restoration system that encompasses value definition, deterioration profiling, purpose‑oriented testing, small‑scale validation, step‑by‑step implementation, and re‑inspection after treatment. Under such a framework, testing would serve not merely as an ancillary aid, but as a substantive pillar for both restoration design and long‑term stewardship of paper cultural relics.
