A new exploration of Zilu’s courage and virtue
子路勇德新探

子路以“勇”著称于孔门，他有天生的勇武，也有在孔子教化下的成长，还有生命实践的升华。文章认为子路勇德发展有三个层次：初入孔门时的一种未经礼义节制的原始生命的“血气之勇”；经孔子礼义智重塑后的获得理性规范与道义方向的“君子之勇”；以及以生命践履杀身成仁的“仁之大勇”。子路的勇德，既展现了个体德性成长的典型范式，也折射出先秦儒家勇论的内在张力。勇作为“三达德”之一，其最高境界并非“杀身成仁”，而是仁智勇三者最和谐的日常生命状态。

Abstract

Zilu was renowned within Confucius's school for his courage; he possessed both an innate martial spirit and a courage cultivated through Confucius's teachings, as well as a courage refined through his lived experience. This article argues that Zilu’s development of courage and virtue unfolds across three distinct levels: the “blood-and-energy courage” of a primal, unbridled existence encountered upon his initial entry into the Confucian school; the “courage of the noble man” —one imbued with rational norms and moral direction, shaped by Confucius's teachings on ritual propriety and wisdom; and the “great courage of benevolence,” manifested through the life-practice of “sacrificing one's life for the sake of achieving humaneness.” Zilu’s embodiment of courage and virtue not only presents a typical paradigm of individual moral growth but also reflects the inherent tension within the pre-Qin Confucian discourse on courage. As one of the “Three Great Virtues,” the highest state of courage is not “sacrificing one's life for the sake of achieving humaneness,” but rather the most harmonious everyday life state encompassing benevolence, wisdom, and courage.
